Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit

Jose Alvarez became Father Jose Alvarez when he was ordained by Archbishop J. Peter Sartain June 9 at St. James Cathedral. Father Alvarez, 30, grew up in the small town of Tocumbo, Michoacan, Mexico, and began thinking about being a priest at age 5. With the help of his godfather and the support of his family, he entered the seminary at age 15. His years of study and pastoral work in Western Washington brought him to the Rite of Ordination, rich in tradition and symbolism. Father Alvarez planned to celebrate Mass in his hometown in Mexico June 23 before beginning his first assignment in the Archdiocese of Seattle.
